The Season of Giving

The Season of Giving

by Frederick Douglass Grimes, III

Blessings and good will to all!

Well, here we are, once again ready and waiting to embark on the holiday season. Thanksgiving is upon us, with Christmas just around the corner. Thanksgiving means the same thing to most of us: Plenty of food! Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, baked macaroni and cheese, And all the trimmings that go along with the holiday festivities.

But it also should be a time of reflection and some soul searching. Never forget for one moment those who are not blessed enough To have family or friends to enjoy the holiday celebrations, for one reason or another. Sad to say there are many who will spend the holidays alone. Quite often this does not have to be the case.

I lived in Miami between 2015 and 2018. There I spent months in different assisted living facilities. But even as a blind veteran, I still noticed each and every holiday, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of all of the twelve to fourteen elderly men who resided at these places, most had families, but none came to visit for the holidays. It had to be one of the saddest experiences that I ever encountered.

I myself had family down there. My mother was and still is living there. But sadly in 2013 she came down with Dementia. And the whole time that I visited with her, she didn’t even know who I was, her oldest son. But god has a reason for each and everything that happens in life. So I just placed her in His hands.

When the holidays roll around, the first thing that comes to most folks’ minds is exchanging gifts, enjoying all of the holiday music, and hopefully rejoicing in the mere fact that the Lord has granted us one more day. Gifts to someone are always nice, just to show them you care. But giving of oneself is the most inexpensive, yet the most important gift of all. Time is precious, and true friends are few. Because but for the grace of god, that lonely person one day could easily be you or I.

God bless, and happy holidays!

A Veteran’s Poem

United we Stand, Divided we Fall

by Frederick Douglass Grimes, III

A veteran is a veteran,
No matter which branch they serve.
Fighting for your country,
Boy! That takes some nerve.

Men and women take the oath
To serve their country well,
Leaving behind families.
The hardships only they can tell.

With one thought in mind: To complete their mission.
Come home safe.
The training and experience
For years to come would serve them well.

Countless soldiers have given their lives
To protect us, one and all.
Let us hope and pray
That not one more soldier will ever have to fall!

God bless America!
